Pinehurst Directions

The Village of Pinehurst, located in an area known as "the Sandhills" in Moore County, is in south central North Carolina about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh, the state capital, and about 75 miles east of Charlotte.

Although established in 1895, the Village did not become a municipality until 1980. Based on the 2000 Census, the population within the corporate limits of the Village (14.3 square miles) has increased by an astonishing 91% since 1990. Founded by James Walker Tufts, and designed with assistance from Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York's famed Central Park, the Village was laid out like a New England style village.

Pinehurst enjoys international recognition as a golf resort, with the well-known Pinehurst Resort located in the heart of the Village. The Village of Pinehurst and Pinehurst Resort were given National Landmark status in 1996 for their historical, significant role in U.S. golf history. There are more than 40 golf courses within minutes of Pinehurst with the list of designers being a Who's Who of golf course design including Donald Ross, Ellis Maples, Tom Fazio, Dan Maples, Gene Hamm, Robert Trent Jones, Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and many others.
